When a 'One-Size-Fits-All' Approach Doesn't Fit
Our program is a hybrid learning experience called The Village. This program provides a flexible schedule for students who are involved in athletics, music, theater, or other community activities. The learning experience at the Village includes a combination of online competency-based core courses and in-person elective courses such as personal inquiry, collaborative problem solving, writing lab, and individual projects. Upperclassmen may also have career exploration and internship opportunities.
Students have a personalized learning experience with small class sizes and have a blend of online learning and in-person experiences. Students attend Monday through Thursday for four hours each day, for electives, lunch, and personal learning time. Staff are available to provide additional support to students during office hours Monday through Thursday.
Our curriculum includes courses built from Accelerate Education, elective courses, and courses that are built by our outstanding staff. We have a variety of courses that are delivered online, in-person, or hybrid. All courses adhere to district, state and national standards.
We have never deviated from our vision to provide small class sizes, individualized attention and feedback on student progress. This personalized approach has benefited students and has contributed to significant student-teacher interaction. Teachers use multiple forms of communication to connect with students including e-mail, texts, phone calls, and/or face-to-face meetings.
Competency Based Learning
In a competency based system, students take pre-assessments and have opportunity to demonstrate mastery of content. Once students have mastered all course content, they will move forward in course progression. Students have flexibility in how they complete the courses during a semester. Some students choose to work in each course weekly, while other students focus their time on a couple of courses at a time. All students are expected to complete his or her courses by the end of the semester.
Upon successful completion of coursework their senior year, students will receive an Academy School District 20 diploma, just like in our traditional high schools. The courses that students complete will show on an ASD20 transcript for college consideration.
